Identity v.s. Platonic Self

How are the idea of platonic self and identity similar and different. Platonic self is when you invent what you want to be. It like the Great Gatsby, one could disregard their physical circumstances or reality. And create a mental picture of what want to be. Identity is just the physical and reality of who we are. Identity can be a part of your platonic self. We always talk about creating our true indentity. something that makes us who we are. our identity is the unique characteristic that makes us unique. In what ways does identity and platonic self differs and are similar?

  1. I think it depends on the person some see themselves in a terrible light, while others are overly arrogant about themselves. These are 2 extremes, but there are always people who are in the middle. At some points, people take themselves for granted and forget the positive effect that they have on people, however there is a difference between what you want to be and who you think you are (i think). Sometimes, these two are separate, other times they coexist. Of other people, it's a little harder to say because everyone has a different impression of who someone is, and only once someone tells you what they see of themselves do you understand more of who they are. Maybe the real question is how close do you see yourself and how others view you?

  2. I'm kind of obsessed with the ideas surrounding platonic theory, and have been since we learned about it last year in TOK1 and english. The thought that how we picture ourselves, other people, situations, the past and the future is bent and often idealistic is so intriguing. Of course, your "platonic" image of yourself in the future will inevitably shape how you act or identify yourself. If you're always working towards a platonic version of yourself, how can you separate that from your true self? And is it even possible to disregard that platonic image to fairly judge your true self? I'm having trouble explaining what I mean, but in a nutshell these thoughts really mess with my mind as well!
